The first use of Benro PD CPL Filter
It is well known that CPL filters (Circular Polarizer filters) are very important for landscape photography. Not only for the reason that CPL filters can strength images’ quality in strong reflection’s situation, highlight scenery behind glasses, darken the sky and whiten the cloud, but also for the reason that the image’s effect by CPL filter cannot be achieved by PS. Therefore, many entry-level photographers that are going to step forward to much higher level usually buy CPL filter as one of their essential equipments. There are many brands filters on the market now. Today, I receive one filter from Benro, a well known Chinese photography accessories producer and I am about to share my first use feeling with you. The filter I receive belongs to PD series and is designed for photographers stepping to higher level from entry-level.
When referring to Benro, we often have tripods and camera bags in mind. Actually, Benro has prepared several years for the launching of filters. She launched officially UV, CPL, ND, NDX and PL for MIRRORLESS five categories filters at the 2013 China P&E in Beijing.
The PD CPL filter is packed in a bluish violet quadrate box with raised silver PD in the middle.
The rear of the box is printed the filter’s feature in English.
The filter is made from super flat Schott glass coated with water proof and oil repellent WMC coating to increase light transmission by reducing reflections and scattered light. The rugged black frame is constructed from anodized high quality aluminum alloy treated by high temperature power paint to reduce reflections and flare.
Inside the paper package is a plastic box and inside the plastic box is the CPL filter protected by soft spongia.
The filter ring prints the filter’s specifications. PD refers to its category, CPL-HD refers to high definition CPL filter, WMC refers to water proof and oil repellent multi-coating and the 77mm is its size.
After the basic introduction of the PD filter, then I attach it to the Nikon AF-S-70 lens and we have a look at the effect together.
Have a look from the front, the reflections of the filter is dark bluish violet, similar to the paper package.
The performance of the Benro CPL is very good. I take two group photos to compare the difference before and after using Benro CPL filter. We can see from the following picture that the image is much sharper and more saturated. The sky is much bluer, the cloud is much whiter and the reflection from the building is decreased. ( both the two groups of pictures, the above one is shot with Benro CPL filter and the below one is shot without Benro CPL filter)
I also test the CPL filter’s performance about the filtering out reflections and the effect is also satisfying.
I cut the same part from pictures taken with and without Benro CPL filter and expand them to 100%. From the screenshot we can see the image shot with Benro CPL is more saturated and much sharper.
The Benro PD CPL filters sell at price between 200-400 RMB. Compared with other brands, the price is reasonable and affordable and the performance is excellent. Later on, I’ll post more pictures shot with the Benro CPL filter on, please pay attention to the following text if you are interested in photography and CPL filters.
